A former Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, Hammler is Telos Corporation’s Cyber Security and Information Assurance Xacta Product Manager.   She earned her B.A. in International Relations from Brown University (R.O.T.C. scholarship), and an MBA in Information Systems Management from The George Washington University (Beta Gamma Sigma).  She and her husband Rich, who have been residents of Northeast Leesburg for over 22 years, are the proud parents of Kathryn, 20, and John, 17.  She is also an avid runner.
Katie Sheldon Hammler was first elected to the Leesburg Town Council in 2004, after having served as a Leesburg Economic Development Commissioner. She is the only council member unanimously elected to serve as Vice Mayor (2008-2010).
She was unanimously elected by Virginia Municipal League (VML) members to serve as Town Section Chair and, most recently, Vice President. She is slated to be President in 2017. Katie’s election marks the first time in VML’s 110 year history that a Leesburg representative has been elected to an executive role.
Leesburg has the lowest tax rate of comparable towns such as Vienna, Blacksburg, and Purcellville, and is the only town in the Commonwealth with a triple AAA bond rating. CNN ranked Leesburg as one of the 4th best towns in the United States in which to live.
“Katie is a tremendous member of the leadership team at the Virginia Municipal League, and I look forward to her filling the role of president in 2017,” said Ron Rordam, Blacksburg Mayor and 2016 VML president. "I have always been impressed with her grasp of issues and her dedication to the people of Leesburg. She is a true Leesburg asset."
